Welcome to the 'One Northumberland, Many Communities' website...

A new campaign aimed at making the case for a single unitary solution for Northumberland has been launched this week.

‘One Northumberland, Many Communities’ is the brainchild of a number of prominent individuals from across the North East, whose concerns about the future shape of local government in the county area have prompted them into action. Having discussed their views over the past year, they decided that the current debate over local government was a ripe opportunity in which to launch a formal campaign.

PRESS RELEASE: Tuesday 5 June 2007

Local Businessman joins ‘One Northumberland, Many Communities’ Campaign

‘One Northumberland, Many Communities’, the campaign for a single unitary council for Northumberland has today announced that it will be joined by a new high profile member, local businessman, Robert Evans.

Mr Evans currently serves on the North East Chamber of Commerce Board and Executive. He is also a Connexions Northumberland Board member.

On joining the ‘One Northumberland, Many Communities’ campaign steering group, Mr Evans said:

“Having spoken with those involved in setting up the campaign, it is clear that we held similar views about how local government in Northumberland should look. A single unitary solution will not only provide a better future for local people but for business across the region and the wider North East.”

A professional businessman with over 35 years experience, Mr Evans added:

“A single unitary solution will help to reduce bureaucracy and cut red tape while providing the most cost effective delivery of services and allowing great savings to be made.”

On the option of a two-unitary solution, as proposed by the county's District councils, Mr Evans said:

“I am concerned that with two authorities, split responsibility for transport, economic development and skills will lead to double standards, greater confusion and the opportunity for authorities to delay or pass the buck.”

Other members of the ‘One Northumberland, Many Communities’ steering group include Sir Ian Wrigglesworth, the Venerable Robert Langley, Archdeacon of Lindisfarne, local business woman, Carole Beverley and former County Council leader, Michael Davey.
