About us...
‘One Northumberland, Many Communities’ has been created to make the case for a single unitary authority for the Northumberland area and to provide the people of the County and its many communities with a platform for intelligent debate.
Who we are...
‘One Northumberland, Many Communities’ brings together an independent group of key individuals with a range of shared concerns about the future of Northumberland and how local government in our county might deliver services better, improve engagement with local people, fight our corner regionally and nationally and bring in greater investment.
You can read about the members of the steering group in detail here.
The aims of 'One Northumberland, Many Communities':
- To make clear the benefits of a unitary outcome for Northumberland within the window of opportunity created by the current round of local government reform.
- To outline why a new settlement for Northumberland should look beyond the existing two-tier county and districts model to a new, fit-for-purpose unitary arrangement.
- To consider improved governance structures, including the potential for a directly elected cabinet for the new authority.
- To call for greater deliberative and participatory democracy in the Northumberland area.
- To engage with the Districts' bid with a view to incorporating relevant proposals into a single unitary proposal.
